While attending school, he began investing the risk capital in his free time. He would spend hours in the library, researching and reading about the market. This research increased his interest in financial trading. Carroll first trade was in 1990 for $3,000, realizing growth to $40,000, he then watched the contract drop to $23,000 before selling. He later claimed that this first, nerve-racking trade taught him the importance of risk management.
